The Baptism of Christ
15th January 2012
Good morning and welcome to the Church of the Ascension for our worship this Sunday. After the opening prayer, there will be a short period of quiet before we sing the first hymn.
O God, the spirit of all things new,
of energy and of change,
give us the confidence and strength
to confront the injustice of this world;
support us in our efforts to see right prevail;
make us single-minded in seeking peace;
use us to bring about your commonwealth on earth.
Amen.

Not
The Last
Supper
Tonight there
will be us a
chance to enjoy a musical evening in the form of a recital by Dante DiIanni who
will perform piano works by Bach, Haydn, Schumann and Brahms. This programme is
Dante’s entry for the Leeds piano competition later in the year. The recital
will begin at 5 o’clock and I hope it will attract a large audience. Entry is
free but there will be a retiring collection for the fabric fund. However,
afterwards you are invited to NOT THE LAST SUPPER in the church hall. This is a
simpler version of the dining club which some of you may have already been
involved in. There will be food and drink at a cost of £10 a head. These
proceeds will also go to the fabric fund. There are no tickets for NOT THE LAST
SUPPER but it would help if you could let me know if you are coming, either by
emailing me or signing the list at the back of the church. With best wishes,
Margaret

Begging Bowl for January 2012 is Anti-Slavery International.
Millions of men, women and children around the world are forced to lead lives as slaves. People are sold like objects, forced to work for very little or no pay and are at the mercy of their ‘employers’. Slavery exists today despite the fact that it is banned in most of the countries where it is practiced, it is also prohibited by the Universal Declarition of Human Rights. Women in eastern Europe are forced into prostitution, children are sold into bonded labour in India and trafficked between West African countries, men are forced to work as slaves on Brazilian agricultural estates.
Contemporary slavery takes many forms and affects people of all ages, sex and races. It must be stopped and Anti-Slavery internation is dedicated to the eradicatin of this cruel and barbaric task.
Please give generously.

The Collect
Heavenly Father,
at the Jordan you revealed Jesus as your Son:
may we recognize him as our Lord
and know ourselves to be your beloved children;
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.GO
Lord, you have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.
You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely.
You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.
Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,”
Even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.
For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts.
See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Glory to God source of all being, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.
Genesis 33.1-11
Jacob and Esau are reconciled
Looking up, Jacob saw Esau coming and with him. 400 men He himself went ahead of them and bowed to the ground seven times, until he reached his brother. But Esau ran to meet him , took him in his arms, threw himself on his neck and wept as he kissed him. Then looking up he saw the women and the children. Who are these with you?’ he asked. Jacob answered, ’The children whom God hath bestowed on me’. The slave girls came up with their children, and they all bowed low. Then Leah too came up with her children, and they all bowed low. Finally Rachel and Joseph came up and bowed low.
Esau asked,’ What is the purpose of this whole camp I have met/’ ‘To win my lord’s favour’, he replied. ‘Brother, I have plenty’, Esau answered,’’ keep what is yours’. Jacob protested,’ No, if I have won your favour, please accept the gift I offer, for in fact I have come into your presence as into the presence of God since you have received me kindly. So accept the gift I have brought for you, since God has been generous to me and I Have all I need.’ And he urged him, and Esau accepted.
